81st Fighter Squadron change of command

Spangdahlem is home to the 81st fighter squadron. They fly A-10 Thunderbolts, quite possibly one of the coolest planes ever.

In late May I was asked to make some cakes for a change of command party. The only guidelines I was given was that one of them should have the squadron patch on it.

I barely managed the patch.

Here is a picture of the actual patch for comparison.

I also made a plain cake with a panther paw on it, since their mascot is the panther. Their colors are also black and yellow.

For the third cake, I thought it would be great to have a representation of an A-10. This is what I ended up doing.

The colors are a bit off because I had to adjust them since the tablecloth was so dark.
I used a paper model I found on line (I can't find the site now, why didnt I bookmark it?!?), which was the majority of the work. There were eleventybillion pieces to cut and assemble.

Each of these cakes are white, with buttercream frosting.

Here is a shot of all of them together. There were surprisingly few complications.

Tinkerbell

This past weekend I made two Tinkerbell themed cakes for a birthday party.

Why two? Well, they were not too sure how many people were going to be there, so they wanted one chocolate and one white cake.

Here is the chocolate one.

Tink is sitting on a "stump" made with two 6" rounds, and frosted with dark chocolate buttercream (my first time making chocolate buttercream!). The "stump" sits on a chocolate cake frosted in a thin layer of the chocolate buttercream, and then covered over with regular buttercream. I piped in the "grass" using a Wilton's grass tip. The flowers and the embellishments are made out of colored fondant with a little bit of Gum-Tex mixed in to make them a bit stiffer.

I got the idea for this one surfing the web, and found several good ideas on this site which is an excellent resource for ideas.

Here is a detail shot of the toadstools and flowers.

This is the white cake. Originally supposed to be a "topsy turvy" cake, but you saw how well that turned out. It was sort of topsy turvy because I offset the top tier a bit.

There was nothing specifically "Tinkerbell" about this cake, just the colors and the flowers. I did stick some fairy wand party favors I found in the top, but I think that they are hard to see in the pictures.

Detail of the top. It's a lot busier and unorganized than I wanted, but I did not plan ahead too well. I'm total rubbish at making fondant bows, so it sort of ended up being a bit of a jumble.

Here is a shot of the two cakes together.

I regret that I forgot to properly finish and cover the cake board the chocolate cake is sitting on. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out.

Caketastrophy!

Maybe not the best start to my cake blog, but kind of funny.

This was supposed to turn out to be a topsy turvy cake for a Tinkerbell themed party.

Well, not so much....

But still, as you can see it was not all a waste. The husband dug in before I could throw it off the back porch. It's ugly as all get out, but still tasty!

The cake I ended up delivering in the next post!
